Mark Chapter 2 Study Reference

Who does Jesus think he is?

Chapter 1 Makes it clear who Mark thinks Jesus is

  • Good news about Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God

Chapter 1 lays out the evidence

  • Baptism by John/annointing for his roles as prophet, priest and king
  • Overcoming of temptation in the wilderness
  • His authority over physical sickness and spiritual oppression

Why are Mark 2:1-12 some of the most important verses in Mark?

  • The pharisees are taken aback by Jesus and his audacity to forgive a man’s sins. Who does this guy think he is? Only God can forgive sins.
  • The SON of Man has authority.

What is Jesus saying here?

  • Daniel 7:13-1413 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
  • Then he shows his authority both to forgive and to heal.

Ok, so he’s the Messiah, but what is his purpose?

  • Mark 2:13-1713 “Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. 15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
  • Came to save sinners (where we get Jesus, friend of sinners saying)
  • He came to internalize the law

Verse 20 is big

  • Mark 2:20  “But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.”
  • Jesus’ first allusion to his death
